Google Pay replaced Android Pay in February 2018, and creates a consistent checkout experience online, in-app, and in store. You’ll still be able to pay with Google Pay, as you do today with Android Pay.

Existing Android Pay users do not need to do anything - your app will automatically update to the new branding in the near future. If you are interested in Google Pay but not currently an Android Pay user, you can still download the Android Pay app today to make fast and simple in-store payments - the app will update when Google Pay is available.

Simply download the Google Pay app from the Google Play Store. If you already have a Visa card linked to your Google account simply link that card to the Google Pay app by confirming a few details, or link to a new Visa card - it’s as simple as snapping a picture.

Google Pay can be used to touch and pay wherever Visa contactless payment is accepted – all you need to do is look for the Contactless Symbol on any point of sale terminal.

If your phone is ever lost or stolen, you can lock and erase it from anywhere with Find My Device Also, you can simply search “Find my phone” and Google will show you where it is on a map. Since your Visa card information is never stored on the phone when you use Google Pay, there’s no need to cancel your physical card if your phone is lost or stolen.

Visa works with your bank to assign a unique virtual account number that’s used when you make payments through Google Pay, meaning your underlying card details are never shared with your payment. Think of this Virtual Account Number (payment token) as a digital substitute for your Visa card.

When you add your Visa card to Google Pay, we work with your bank to assign a payment token (labelled as a Virtual Account Number in Google Pay), as a substitute for your physical card details, it’s this token that is used to send and process payments through Google Pay. This means your name and full card details are never shown in the app and never shared with the retailer. In order to use Google Pay, we require that you set up a secure Google device lock (this can be a passcode, pattern or fingerprint).

Mobile payment services such as Google Pay can be used for payments over the 30 Euro contactless threshold, with a number of retailers supporting what we call ‘high value’ mobile contactless payment – which involve you verifying yourself using your passcode, fingerprint or pattern, which is entered on your device. These cardholder verification methods add an additional layer of security for peace of mind, and act in much the same way as when you use 'Chip & PIN' to secure payments made in store with your Visa card.
